“Create In Me a Clean Heart, O God,” and “Missa brevis in E-flat Major” by Healey Willan

A commentary on this week’s music by Dr. James T. Gerber, Music Associate

Our musical offerings for the first Sunday of Lent include two selections from the British-Canadian organist and composer, Healey Willan (1880-1968). Willan was known as the “Dean of Canadian composers” during his lifetime. Willan’s oeuvre consists of over 800 titles that include operas, symphonies, and chamber music, as well as works for orchestra, organ, and piano. However, he is best known for his religious choral music; compositions that are among the standard repertoire of many church and concert choirs today. Our senior choir will sing “Create In Me a Clean Heart, O God,” one of Willan’s many sacred anthems, and during our fourth Sunday choral Eucharist, our chamber choir will sing a portion of his “Missa brevis in E-flat Major,” one of his numerous liturgy settings.
